The Mystery at Harrowdale Manor: Chapter 2
Up at the manor, cousins Clementine and Rose waited impatiently for their hostess to arrive.
"She's always late," Clementine groused.
At that moment a frazzled Elena appeared. "Someone was sneaking around the garden!" she declared emphatically.
"Please," Clementine waved off Elena's concerns airily. "I'm sure you were only imagining things."
"It's true," Elena insisted. "I heard someone sneaking around out there just now, but I didn't see anyone."
"Have you told Niles?" Rose suggested.
Niles Sharp was an old colleague of Elena's late husband, Captain Mason Harrowdale. Ever since Mason died, Niles had been doing his best to assist the young widow in any way he could. He said he felt it was his duty with Mason gone. After all, Mason's greedy relatives were trying everything to get their hands on Elena's inheritance and she needed all the protection she could get. The lady of the house found Niles out by the front door.
Relieved, she told him all about everything including what she had seen before being frightened off. He listened intently with keen interest.
"Don't worry, Elena darling," he put on his hat, setting his jaw in determination. "I'll look into it. I promise."
Good to his word, Niles hurried out to the garden to look around. He didn't see anyone or anything to indicate trouble, but something caught his eye before he'd gone far.
Getting down to his knees, Niles took a closer look. "What's this?"
Was there something hidden among the leaves?
Niles brushed away the leaves. "Is that a...dragonfly pin?"
