The Mystery at Harrowdale Manor: Chapter 8
Back in Mason's study, Elena knew she had to search more thoroughly. Her husband had been a very clever man, and it wouldn't have been above him to employ tricks to hide valuable items from unscrupulous eyes.
First she checked all the drawers carefully from left to right, looking through all of their contents. However, she found nothing of interest. As she pushed the last drawer back into place, she heard a strange scraping sound coming from it.
Pulling the drawer out, Elena reached into the hole and groped about. It would be just like Mason to hide something important behind a drawer. She still remembered when he'd given her the necklace she most treasured. He'd hid it in an old box in the back of the attic and he'd had her hunting all over the house for hours following cryptic clues until she could find it. She smiled at the memory.
Suddenly, her hand brushed something different than the smooth wooden surface.
"Oh," Elena gasped as she pulled forth a piece of paper. "What's this?"
Replacing the drawer, Elena opened the paper. It was a map! On closer inspection it turned out to be a map of the manor grounds. At the top, written in Mason's fine print were the words, "I've hidden the will with the treasure. Everything goes to E."
Her! Elena was stunned. If the map led to not only a treasure but also Mason's will that might well be worth killing for. But who had done the dirty deed? There was only one way to find out.
When Niles returned that afternoon with papers for Tobias to sign, Elena excitedly pulled him aside to tell him about her discovery and her plan.
"Tonight at supper I'll tell them all I know where Mason's will is hidden," Elena gushed. "Whoever was the killer is sure to come after me for it."
"I'm not so sure it's a good idea to taunt your family like that," Niles argued. "What if one of them really is a killer? It's not safe."
However, Elena assured him she would be fine, refusing his advice. Against his better judgment, Niles left, worried yet etched on his face. But Elena wasn't concerned about that. That night at supper, Elena bragged to her family about finding where Mason had hid his will. She told them all she would be searching the garden that evening for it. With any luck, Mason's killer would be revealed before the night was over.
