The Mystery at Harrowdale Manor: Chapter 6
The apothecary's shop was located just at the outskirts of town.
He himself was an excitable young man, who loved his work greatly. He spent most of his time alone, but he never shunned visitors. In fact, he seemed ecstatic to welcome others into his mysterious little world.
As Elena entered the shop later that very morning, the little bell over the door gave off a musical chime, and the apothecary turned to greet her with a bright smile.
"Hi," he said. "Welcome to my shop. What can I do for you today?"
"I was wondering if you could tell me what this is," Elena held up the mysterious bottle for the apothecary to see. "I found it under a desk at home. It does have a label, but I can't read it."
"Hmm," the apothecary took the bottle and examined it. "The label says strawberry seeds, but that's not what's inside," he murmured as if speaking to himself.
"Tell you what," he looked up at her and grinned. "You leave the bottle with me and come back in a few hours. By then I should be able to give you a definite answer on the contents. Okay?"
Elena agreed and left him to his work.
The apothecary worked feverishly at discovering the remaining contents of the bottle. He mixed, stirred, and combined, all the while muttering to himself.
When several hours had expired, Elena returned tentatively to the apothecary shop. On the one hand she wanted to know what had been contained in the mysterious little bottle, but on the other she dreaded the answer.
"Welcome back," the apothecary greeted her when she entered. "I've discovered the contents of your bottle."
"It held deadly nightshade berries," he announced ominously.
"What?!" Elena cried horrified.
She was so stunned that she wavered for a moment on her feet. Her husband had been poisoned? No! It couldn't be. Who would do such a terrible thing?
"Are you going to be all right?" the apothecary asked, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder in concern.
"I'll be fine," Elena assured him, doing her best to brace up. "Thank you so much for all your help."
As Elena left the shop, her mind was on what the apothecary had told her. If the bottle contained poison than someone must've used it on Mason, for Mason was never the suicidal type. If that were the case, the best suspects were all staying at her house right this very minute. No matter what, Elena had to find her husband's killer and bring him to justice. Her first step: asking around.
