The Mystery at Harrowdale Manor: Chapter 4
Her thoughts still on her conversation with Clementine, Elena needed some time to think alone the next morning. So she made her way out to the bench in the garden and sat in the crisp air of the autumn morn. She was so lost in her own thoughts that she didn't even notice her brother-in-law approaching.
"Elena," Tobias Harrowdale spoke as he came towards the bench. "What are you doing out here so early?"
"I might ask you the same thing," Elena said coldly. She noticed her nephew, Silas, following close behind his father as always. Though Tobias tried to be polite, Elena knew full well he felt he was owed part of her late husband's estate as he had been Mason's business partner.
"Just going for a stroll," Tobias hedged, but Elena saw right through his guise.
"Oh really?" she asked coyly. "And it wouldn't have anything to do with convincing me to give up some of my inheritance, right?"
"Elena, I earned a good portion of that working with Mason in the business," Tobias protested. "Some of it rightfully belongs to me."
Elena leapt to her feet, through arguing with him. "Mason left his part of the business to me," she declared firmly. "This is my inheritance, and you have no right to it."
"I will contest this for as long as it takes," Tobias glared. "I earned that business, and I will have it. Unless you can find a will that proves otherwise, I might have a pretty solid case. Come on, Silas."
With those words, he and his son stormed off, leaving Elena to consider his words. No will of her husband's had ever been found, and she often found herself wondering where it might be.
The rest of the day was uneventful, but Elena sure had a lot to think about. While she saw vague glimpses of Clementine, Rose, and Tobias's family, who were all staying in the manor for the time being, she didn't really talk to any of them. Instead she contented herself to consider her current problem in concentrated silence.
That night a noise awoke her and she went to the window to see what it might've been. Far below her Adelaide, Tobias's wife, was slipping carefully across the lawn.
"What's she up to?" Elena wondered, but the only way to find that out would be to follow her.
A few moments later found Elena in the garden, watching from out of sight while Adelaide looked about her apprehensively. Seeing no one, the young lady decided it was safe and continued forward.
Over by the garden bench, a cloaked figure stepped from the shadows and greeted Adelaide. A man!
What was Adelaide meeting a strange man in the middle of the night for? Elena wondered, watching from the darkness nearby. Of course, Tobias would have to be informed right away. Still, Elena couldn't understand what the mysterious stranger had to do with anything.
