The Mystery at Harrowdale Manor: Chapter 5
What she had seen in the garden tortured Elena all night. She knew Tobias would be furious to know, but was it really right to keep such a secret from him?
At long last, she decided she couldn't keep something like that from her brother-in-law, so she sought him out, finding him in her late husband's study.
"What are you doing back here?" she asked Tobias suspiciously.
"Looking for a document I need for a business deal," Tobias assured her simply. "But I could ask you the same question. What do you need?"
"I was looking for you," Elena explained, before launching into what she had seen the night before. When she told Tobias about Adelaide's midnight rendezvous, he could hardly believe it was true.
"Are you sure it was her?" Tobias staggered back.
Elena looked away, embarrassed. "Yes, I'm sure," she said sadly.
Unable to say more, Tobias hurried from the study in shock, leaving Elena alone to wonder what he had really been doing in there in the first place.
I never did look this room over very closely after Mason passed, Elena decided to herself. Perhaps it's time I gave it a more thorough examination.
She began with the drawers, rifling through her husband's personal papers. But there wasn't a lot there, especially not anything she really understood as Mason never discussed business with her. No will, either, so she chose to search under the desk next. After all, something important might've fallen behind or beneath it.
As she knelt on the floor and leaned over to look underneath it, it occurred to her what anyone would think of her if they walked in to find her like this. Wait, what was that? Elena reached beneath the desk and pulled out a smooth, cool object.
"A bottle?" Elena wondered as she stood up and examined the object in her hand.
"What could this be?" She queried aloud. "And what was it doing under there?"
At that moment she got an overwhelming flashback to that fateful morning when she had walked into her husband's study and found him dead on the floor.
He'd been late to breakfast and she'd been curious as to why. It had shocked and horrified her to see him lying there, lifeless. The law officers had to be called, they brought the coroner, and they'd carried the body out. It had taken ages for it to sink in fully, and now Elena began to have doubts again. She'd never completely believed that Mason had just dropped dead, and this bottle seemed to confirm that. Could it have something to do with Mason's death? Perhaps a visit to the town apothecary was in order.
