A Rare Display of Crochet

Hi! Barrel Ryder here with what I've been up to these last few days.

Last week on Friday I started work on a free crochet amigrumi pattern I found on the internet; I also finished him on Saturday. For those of you that don't know, amigrumi (ama-GRU-me) is a Japanese art of knitting or crocheting stuffed toys or dolls. I don't really crochet often but I really wanted to do this little guy up, he's so cute!

Loki Crochet

See, look at that face! This is Loki from the Marvel Universe. He was made using lace weight yarn, a 2/2.25MM crochet hook, size 6MM black safety eyes, and a jerry-rigged fun fur wig. He sits at just over 2 inches high.

I did almost all of him on Friday, except I hadn't put his coat on and I didn't finish his hair. The pattern I created Loki from suggested using embroidery floss for the hair and pointed me towards a tutorial online. However I used nearly an entire skein of embroidery floss and didn't have enough to cover Loki's head and his head is tiny... By the time I got that far in the pattern it was way past bed time, it was midnight... I thought of using the black fun fur the night I started and then I finished in the morning.

Loki from the Marvel movies has a very distinctive style of hair, with a widows peak and longish straight hair so I had to try and replicate that with the fur. I started by shrinking a fur wig pattern I already had... then I had to go back and shrink it some more. After that I used the long middle piece from the first shrinking and I skinnied it up, stretched it out and carefully cut it to have the widows peak. I cut it out of the fur with the fur facing back so it would have that slicked back look. Then I took the side piece from the second shrinking and trimmed it up around the bottom and cut it out so the fur would hang down. Next I sewed the wig together with embroidery floss and lastly I sewed it to his head using sewing thread so it would stay on.

Loki Crochet

Loki wears a nearly all black 'jump-suit' except for green around each wrist. On top of that he wears a yellow 'necklace' and a black and green coat. It is very hard to see the green because it's so dark but trust me it's there.

This is Loki's other side, his hair kinda sticks out funny but I love him anyway.

After I finished Loki I decided to make him a blanket out of the almost invisible green that Loki wears so I started knitting the blanket he's sitting on as a special surprise for him, I finished it today and Loki loves it.

In this picture we can see Loki cuddling his new blanket, not that he cuddles things, mind you...

I used the pattern "Pocket Loki Amigrumi" from the Tumblr blog Over the Bifrost. She has both Loki and Thor patterns and she says you can use them as the base for other characters if you want  to...as for me I think I'll stick with mostly knitting, something about having two needles instead of one and having all the stitches easy to see makes it a lot more fun to me...

In fact I'm working on a doll related knitting project right now and when I finish it I'll be sure to show you.
