Shadow Link

So, to go along with my last post on taking pictures, I'm showing off Link's costume today.

When I bought Link it was with the intention to make costumes to sell based off of Link from the Legend of Zelda video games. I like the character of Link and I thought a little YoSD Link would be a lot of fun. At the time I searched high and low for the perfect YoSD doll to fit the character. The most important thing to me was the ears. Link has big elf ears--at least he does in Ocarina of Time--and my YoSD Link needed elf ears too, the bigger the better. Then I got lucky. Someone posted a used Bambicrony Cookie Elf up on eBay with the perfect HUGE elf ears. I was so glad I won the auction (I was the only bidder, but that's beside the point) and Link got to come live with us.

The original plan was to have Link be Link. Blonde hair, blue eyes, green costume, the works. But the perfect Link wig does not exist currently in the doll world, and so I didn't have blonde hair for him. I did have blue eyes meant to be his--my sister gave them to me for my birthday the year I got Link--but what good were blue eyes without the blonde hair? However, it just so happens that Descole came with red eyes that I didn't want him to have, and he also came with a white wig. I'd planned to save the white wig for Ryder, but Link desperately needed something, and the red eyes looked so good with his face-up. And the white wig would go with the red eyes so he could be Shadow Link. That would work temporarily, right? Well, it did, but not temporarily.

I eventually did get a blonde wig--yellow, actually--but Link looked so good as he was that I didn't want to change him permanently, so I waited. Then the yellow wig went to Dusti, and so the blue eyes recently went to Link's little sister, Wendy. Guess that's that then. Link will always be the Shadow version and that's fine by me. He fits the mischievous profile a little better anyway.

With that in mind, we decided to make the Link costume, but it had to match the doll for the first one, especially since that might be--and currently has been--the only one we might ever make. So we made him the Shadow Link costume based off of the Four Swords game. I even got him a sword to match.

Designing a costume isn't exactly easy. There are a lot of things to consider. This one is what I call an amateur attempt, because it doesn't have separate arms in the shirt, it's just two pieces sewn together. Well, three if you count both sides of the back, which I suppose I should do.

Link's sword is not only the one from the Four Swords, but it is also gray, which works much better with his Shadow Link costume. I bought it in a set of three so that Ryder, Link, and Thomas could each have their own. Each sword was a different color, which worked perfectly.

I even made Link a belt bag to go with his costume.

When I made it I was thinking of Link, but not Shadow Link. I realized later that the green doesn't match this costume and I might need to think about making him another bag that does match better. It would still be brown, but I would probably sew the chain stitch on it in black instead of green. There's just one small problem...

I put a little feather charm on it because it seemed to match the Link aesthetic. I also put a little fairy on there to be Navi. However, I only had the one fairy charm, so I would have to remove it and replace it with something else if I wanted to make a Shadow Link bag that matched the costume better. Because of that, I really haven't taken making a second bag seriously.

And here's the view of Link's right side. I think this costume turned out nice, but I also think it could be better. Maybe someday when we get our pattern making skills down to a more exact science, we'll think about giving this costume another go.

Anyway, Link and his wolf, Zephyr, don't care either way. They found a map on this cool rock and they're going on an adventure!
