Fiddling with the Settings

Yesterday I took the camera upstairs and tried taking some pictures of Link in his Shadow Link costume.

I've never been into photo shopping my pictures in any way outside of cropping. I tend to prefer what camera alone can take. However, with the camera settings on what I assume to be default, and the room somewhat dark with pink walls, it makes the photos come out strangely grainy with a weird orange-ish pink tinge. I don't like that at all, so without easy access to the manual, I decided on doing the next best thing: pushing buttons! This is my usual resort when I'm not certain how to work an electronic device. Of course, read the buttons first to see if you can guess what they might do and, if all else fails, press them.

My first attempt came out hardly better than having the settings on "default." Still tinged and still grainy, but at least it was a little bit lighter and easier to see.

This was done without the flash, as was the first one. Then I fiddled with the settings again, leaving it without the flash once more.

Yikes! The picture came out terrible. But at least now I know it is possible to take a worse picture with my digital camera than what I usually tend to get indoors. I pressed the button a little more and then tried again, this time with the flash.

Well, at least the color in this one is true to life, but it's so bright! It makes Link look like a shiny cartoon character. I suppose he is supposed to be based off of a cartoon character, sort of, but his hair really isn't supposed to look like that. Actually, this one gives the impression that I was taking pictures with the lights off, which I wasn't. So I tried fiddling some more and went again, still with flash.

This combination of settings turned out to be the best. It's still not great--the wolf looks too red with the pinkish tinge--but at least Link doesn't appear to be glowing in the dark. Anyway, I used this setting for pictures of Link's outfit, and then when I finished, the camera reverted to normal, which means I have no idea exactly how I got this result. Darn it!

In the end I changed the settings one more time and got some pretty good results too. Again, I'm not certain how I got them. Which means I should probably bite the bullet and go find the manual. It's on a CD as a PDF file, which means I not only have to find it, I also have to hook the CD-ROM reader up to my computer to get the file off of there. And then I'll probably end up emailing it to my iPad so I can carry it with me all the time, which inevitably means a few extra steps. Ah, the things we do for our hobbies.
