Board Game
Xavier was so bored. Since Brick had a lot of work to do, Ivy had taken all of the Wall kids out so that their father could have some peace and quiet. Only Descole remained at home, still getting over his cold, and Xavier hadn't been invited along either, so he took his favorite teddy bear and went up to the main house. Because of his origins and how he'd been found on the beach by the Walls with no memory of his own past, Xavier liked to carry his bear with him. As strange as it sounded, the little bear comforted him in his uncertainty, since he still had no idea who he was or where he had come from. But right now he had more pressing issues to worry about, like his boredom. He wished there was something more to do than just lounge around.
Maybe there was a book he could read. Xavier got up to go check in Mr. Wall's bookcase.
"Nothing in here," Xavier groaned. Mr. Wall's books weren't of much interest to a teenage boy.
At his desk, Brick studied the town map, lost in thought. He and Rocky were currently buried in a tough case, and he had little time for anything else.
So bored, Xavier drooped to the couch dejectedly with a heavy sigh. What to do... What to do...
Brick had to take notice of his assistant's distress. For all his past troubles, Xavier was usually rather upbeat and outgoing. Something must be wrong if he were so upset.
"Are you all right?" Brick asked, coming to stand by the couch.
"I'm fine," Xavier answered in a quiet voice, clearly not being completely honest.
"What's the matter?" Brick pressed Xavier, not about to give up.
"There's nothing to do," Xavier confessed, knowing he couldn't keep the truth from Brick for long.
"Follow me," Brick said firmly, enticing his young assistant and his little son up off the couch.
"This is a human game," Brick explained, pulling it out from under the human's bed. "The humans call it a board game, so if you're bored, why don't you give it a try?"
Without another word, Brick returned to the desk and rummaged through it until he found what he was looking for.
Once he had what he was after, he took a seat on the couch and Xavier and Descole came to join him. "Here, why don't you call Marcus and Chris to come over and play a game with you?" he suggested kindly, handing Xavier the tablet. "I'll bet they would enjoy that. Just remember to keep the noise down; I still have a lot of work to do."
"Sure, that's a great idea," Xavier agreed enthusiastically. Brick smiled, returning to his case while Xavier and Descole called Marcus up on the tablet and invited him and Chris over to play.
An hour later found the four of them completely enthralled in their game.
Chris, a natural born gamer, was winning as usual. Maybe it was his cute, innocent face, but whatever it was he generally beat the pants off of whoever played against him, no matter the game.
Marcus, with the world's most rotten luck was in dead last. Whatever they played, he just never seemed to be able to catch a break.
As for Xavier, he was just glad to have something fun to do at last. Board games were a new experience for him, one that he was thoroughly enjoying despite struggling to get ahead.
And Descole determined to do his best to beat Chris. Seeing as he was only in second place, he had high hopes that he might be able to do just that.
As for Brick, he smiled to watch them enjoying themselves, and he was grateful they kept the noise down to a minimum. After all, crime waits for no man, and he and Rocky had a case to crack wide open!
