Maggie's Outfit

Medieval Barbie

Maggie is Midas's girlfriend and also she's not a BJD. She's a Made to Move Barbie. Still, the ability to pose in a Made to Move Barbie is pretty impressive and Barbies scale perfectly with 1/6 mature mini BJDs. But in order for Maggie to fit in with Midas, Rothbart, and Lyra, she needed a medieval costume of her own.

Maggie got a floor length cape in the same fabric as Midas's. See, both Maggie and Midas used to be thieves, so they prefer clothes in colors that blend into the scenery.

For Maggie's costume, I made everything except her boots and pants. The pants that came with the doll were plain black stretch pants so I didn't need to make her any others. As for shoes, well, Barbie makes enough shoes for their dolls that I didn't need to find anything too special. I got these off a Claire from Jurassic World Barbie. They were perfect for Maggie. I'd also love to boil dunk Maggie's hair to flatten it, but these dolls are hard to find and replacing her wouldn't be easy so I'm a little timid about trying it. I will at some point, and it might be better sooner rather than later when I can still find the dolls.

I wanted her to have a turtleneck, long sleeved shirt; brown jerkin; belt; and bag. It's funny how the outfits seem to evolve as I sew. It took two tries to get the shirt. The jerkin turned into a vest, but somehow I liked that better anyway. The belt was probably meant to look like Rothbart's and Midas's belts, but became more like a corset because the jerkin became a vest. And that meant that Maggie's bag had to change too.

The first time I made the shirt, the neck was way too big and so were the sleeves, especially under the armpits. I had to go back and take stuff out to tighten it, but that's okay. That's the point of knit in the first place.

Here's a better look at her pants and boots.

Her vest is made of faux suede and has a really neat Chinese dragon pattern. This worked because Magdalena (Maggie) is actually Chinese, but was raised in a Russian circus and given a Russian name since she was too small to remember her Chinese name. In a medieval world... Don't judge me. My fantasy.

Anyway, I really like how all the outfit pieces come together, even that insanely huge corset belt.

For Maggie's bag, I used a very thin and soft faux leather in a black color. Like Lyra, Maggie's bag hangs over her shoulder by an embroidery floss strap made of three colors braided. I used a burgundy floss to embroider a design on the flap of her bag and then stitched a golden unicorn charm to it.
