Rothbart's Outfit

I've been posting about Rothbart, but I never actually took the time to show his finished outfit since I got it all done. So here it is all finished. He has a cape, jerkin, shirt, pants, boots, gauntlets, boot covers, amulet, belt, sword, sheath, and bag.

Rothbart is the only doll in my mini crew I've done a short cape for. It's made of thin black knit fabric that flows really nicely on such a tiny doll. For his cape I changed the hemline to have points like bat wings.

His boot covers were a lot of work! I had to design a pattern for them, and sew all those tiny straps with buckles to them. The straps are about an eighth of an inch wide and they do all function as straps. In order for him to wear these, I actually have to slide each strap through it's buckle and that's what holds it in place. Why'd I go to all that trouble? Because his boots are lace up, and while I wanted black and the ones with laces are all I could find, I didn't particularly care for the look of the laces with his medieval costume, so I painstakingly fixed that.

You might've already seen most of his under-costume in prior posts. Rothbart has black gauze pants, burgundy gauze shirt, and a black faux leather jerkin. He and his brother, Midas, got their jerkins at the same store.

Rothbart needed a magical amulet, so I made one to hang around his neck.

The "amulet" is actually a thin metal "clock hand" from some steampunk jewelry making supplies I purchased, and I glued a red crystal to the center. Finding a jeweled pendant this small would've been nigh on impossible, especially in just the right colors, so I had to improvise.

The gauntlets or arm guards, whichever you prefer, are made of faux leather with more tiny straps and buckles to hold them in place.

Rothbart's gauntlets are almost exactly like Midas's (same color and everything) except I needed Rothbart's to have a finger piece on his left hand. See, he also needed a magic ring, and I was NOT gluing that directly to the doll! So instead I made a finger piece on the gauntly, sewed it in the tiniest circle, and glued the jewel to that.

For his sword, I purchased a Batman sword keychain. I didn't even know they made such a thing until I was looking for a sword for Rothbart. Keychain weapons are often the perfect size for these dolls, and Rothbart has an affinity with bats, so the Batman sword was perfect. Even better, it's not labeled Batman anywhere but on the big, clunky metal sheath it came with, so it actually looks like a medieval sword. All I had to do was sew up a sheath of burgundy faux leather, the same fabric as his boot covers.

Rothbart's bag is made of the same material as his sheath and boot guards. I sewed some embroidery designs and a little bat charm to the front.

The final piece of Rothbart's story is a special book. I found this one at Hobby Lobby. It's a locket shaped like a journal and has a large oil slick quartz stone on the front. It fits perfectly into Rothbart's bag and so he carries it with him wherever he goes.
