Finally! Boots That Fit!

BJDs similar to Ken dolls are a great size. They're like SD dolls in miniature and they travel really well. The only trouble is that, like a lot of BJDs, they don't fit standard size items.

That's a joke, right? "Standard size" BJD items? Like there really is such a thing...

Anyway, from the get go I wanted some boots for Midas that fit nicely, but finding any was extremely difficult. Ken boots would fit, but they are either completely fabric or plastic. The best Ken boots in plastic look just a little silly with molded laces. Most of the 1/6 size action figure shoes I found are made "attached" to the figure foot, which means the figure has a peg at the bottom of the figure's leg and the "foot" is permanently in the shoe.

At first I had him in YoSD boots, but they weren't exactly what I wanted and they were a little big. They also look like children's boots, really, so I knew he needed something better.

So I started by making him some boots completely out of fabric like some Ken boots are made.

While they looked okay, they didn't function okay in the least. I took him on vacation in these and the seams in the sole made him a touch unsteady on his feet. I worried he was going to fall over constantly, and by the time we got home I knew we needed a plan C. (A being YoSD boots, and B being homemade fabric boots.)

I don't have a picture of plan C because it never came into being. I made some clay soles for boots and then waffled on whether or not fabric boots on sloppy clay soles would turn out. I thought about doing it, and thought about doing it, and thought...but I couldn't bring myself to get the job done. In the end I went back to the internet and searched again.

One idea that had intrigued me in the beginning was Taeyang shoes. Taeyang is a specialty fashion doll with an enormous head and very skinny body. He's similar in height and such to Ken, but he's a bit too skinny and too tall for Ken's clothes to be a perfect fit. However, Ken clothes do fit Taeyang to the point where he can wear them. It was also said Ken shoes fit Taeyang. In that case shouldn't Taeyang shoes fit Ken?

I was given a Taeyang for my birthday several years ago, and so I had an outfit and shoes from Taeyang. When Midas first arrived, I'd tried Taeyang's shoes, but they were not only rubber they were also super sized shoe canoes. There was no way Taeyang's shoes were going to fit Midas, but in that case Ken's shoes shouldn't fit either. With that in mind I went to look again and I discovered something very interesting.

While Taeyang's shoes were comically large, his feet are comically small! He has tiny, Ken sized feet that matched Midas's. That settled it. I'd seen some nice Taeyang boots before. All I had to do now was purchase some.

They came today and I tried them on Midas right away. They fit beautifully!

I was very pleased with the boots.

I only wish I had realized these boots would fit sooner, because I saw them well before I bought Midas...

Oh, well, hindsight is always 20/20. At least now I have some great boots for Midas's next adventure. Provided we go on vacation again this year, that is.
