Damian's I Spy Bottle

Hi! I know it's been a looooonnngggg time since I last posted. I got busy, but that's really no excuse. I apologize to anyone reading this. All right. So, lately my mom, my sister, and I have been working on some kids' crafts that we're going to need this summer. One of these is "treasure" bottles, or I Spy sensory bottles.

We've been gathering all the materials for a week or so now, and have just about collected everything we need to make them, and, while we were at it, Damian had the idea that he wanted to make one too. With that in mind, today I'm going to explain how to make your very own doll-sized, or pocket, I Spy Jar.

I Spy Jar, Sensory Jar

Materials:
1 miniature jar (I found mine at Michaels. It is 2.5" x 3.5" in size)
Scale objects (the number of these items can be to your taste. I used 33 objects for this post, but intend to add 3 more objects to finish it completely)
Crushed Walnut (this can often be found in the reptile section of pet stores)
Funnel (I used a bigger one than the one shown with Damian, which clogged too easily)
Object List (optional)

For my objects I searched through everything I had and also the items we've been gathering for this project for some kids. I found that beads presented the most unique items, and I got creative on my labeling for some.

As you can see, I used a shell that looked like a unicorn's horn, so that's what I called it. I also had a dragon's claw and dragon's egg that I found in my beads. Also in my beads, I even had grapes, a strawberry, and an iridescent corncob! For a few of the other beads I got a little creative too. After all, this was meant to be for a doll, and I wanted it to be fun instead of labeling everything "shell" and "bead."

So, with his materials all gathered, Damian sat down to begin making his I Spy Jar.

He opened the lid and got out his funnel. Step one was to put just a little of the crushed walnut on the very bottom of the jar.

Next he dug out his objects.

He tossed about five items into the bottom of the jar before pouring more crushed walnut in. He only put in enough to cover the first layer of items.

Then he dropped a few more objects into the jar.

He covered those over too.

Five more items went in.

"Hey, Damian," Atlas wandered over to see what his little brother was up to. "What are you doing?"

"I'm making an I Spy Jar," Damian explained.

I Spy Jar, Sensory Jar

"See?" Damian threw some more items into the jar. "I toss the stuff in, and then cover it with the crushed walnut."

Atlas watched as Damian covered that layer up and added another.

"This is the last of it," Damian announced as he threw in the last few objects. "Now, I'll cover those up."

I Spy Jar, Sensory Jar

"Interesting," Atlas rubbed his chin. "But does it work?"

I Spy Jar, Sensory Jar

"I don't know," Damian admitted. "From here, I can't see any of the stuff I threw in."

"I guess you better screw on the lid and shake it up to find out," Atlas suggested.

I Spy Jar, Sensory Jar

Damian put the lid on. "Ready?"

"Ready." Atlas nodded.

Damian tipped the jar on its side and spun it around.

I Spy Jar, Sensory Jar

"Ooohhh! There's the frog! See?" Damian pulled the jar over to him and leaned over it.

I Spy Jar, Sensory Jar

Atlas picked the jar back up and grinned. "Let's see how many things I can find if you read the list to me."

"Okay," Damian agreed eagerly.

I Spy Jar, Sensory Jar

It took a little while, but, eventually, Atlas located all thirty-three items Damian had put into the jar. "That's pretty neat, Damian," Atlas praised when they were finished. "And I'm impressed you took the initiative to make it yourself with your own toys and things. I'm going to get you something extra special to put into your jar."

"What is it?" Damian asked, excited.

Atlas shook his head, laughing. "A surprise. You'll just have to wait a little while to find out."

Do you like doing things like this for your dolls? I do. It's a ton of fun to find all the things you need for a simple doll project and get it made up. It also helps you to connect better with your doll when you do things with them or for them instead of letting them sit alone on a shelf all the time. I do so much with Damian that he's become my favorite, and I really love his big brother, Atlas, too. The two of them are a lot of fun together and they come up with the best stuff to do, especially Damian.

I'm going to try and be more diligent about posting on here, but I can't make any promises. I do have an Instagram account now, and you're welcome to follow me on there if you have an IG account as well.
