Building a Fort
It's been dark and rainy outside all day today. Damian wanted to go out and splash in puddles, but I told him that wouldn't be happening, since he doesn't have a raincoat. He pouted for a bit until I suggested something I used to love doing when I was a kid: building a fort.
Damian loved the idea and asked Horace and Wendy to help him out.
They gathered a table, chairs, and the Wall's half-finished couch as the bones for their structure. Then they threw a few blankets over the top and they were good to go. Horace insisted that no shoes be allowed inside the fort, and so the three left their boots outside.
They set up the lantern in the center for some light. After all, it was dark outside today...and being kids they refused to turn the lights on either.
Like all little kids, they wanted to fill their fort chock full of all kinds of fun things, so Wendy brought a doll, her knit elf, and a large plush unicorn.
Horace and Damian grabbed a few tools they needed for adventuring and Horace also brought Bigfoot.
Damian grabbed a suspenseful story, because he wanted something scary to read in the dark fort.
As the three gathered around the lantern...
...Damian offered to read aloud from his book.
Wendy and Horace weren't really sure they liked the scary story, but they let Damian have his way anyway to be nice since he's still new.
Each child brought their own plush pillow to sit on. Wendy, who loves unicorns, brought her fluffy white unicorn.
Horace brought a hero from one of his favorite movies.
And Damian borrowed Percy's snowy owl.
Just as Damian reached the most nail-biting moment in his book, they heard a noise outside the fort! Hearts pounding, they looked up to see...
Flame! He'd come to investigate what all the ruckus was about.
Hey! What are you guys doing?
"Hi, Flame. We're reading a scary story in our fort," Wendy told him. "Want to join us?"
I'm not sure there's room in there for me, Flame inspected the fort closer. Maybe I better stay out here.
My next post will be of some of these photos with the flash, so they can be seen better.
Building this fort was a lot of fun, and reminded me of all the times we used to build forts when we were kids. Our most impressive one was made with a card table in front and then chairs standing around the edges in back to make this big room beyond the table. It was so cool and roomy we left it up for months and played with it with our friends for ages. Luckily, it was in the basement where we could leave it up.
This little doll fort was pretty easy to make, but I did need to clean it up as soon as I was done. I couldn't leave it out in the middle of the floor for days or weeks. It was as easy to clean up as it was to make, though, so no big deal and I could throw it together again any time I wanted. Maybe someday Damian will get the urge to build another one with his friends.
